The Middle Aged Brain

Middleaged absentmindedness may be less attributable to brain cells baked during years of passing the dutchie, or lost swirling down the drain of weekend excesses, than previously thought.

According to the latest in brain science, Barbara Strauch suggests that the addlebrained can actually be agile brained. The middle aged brain is keenly suited to take on new challenges, to blow out the old neural pathways and blaze new trails of connections.

“... If you always hang around with those you agree with and read things that agree with what you already know, you’re not going to wrestle with your established brain connections.”

Always wanted to learn to play violin? Thought about going back to graduate school to study comparative religion? Learn how to crochet? Be a beekeeper? Well, could be-- now's the time!

If you've shaken things up a bit and started in a new direction, be an inspiration: do tell!

How true! There's nothing more exciting than trying something brand new at an old age!

YESSSS! People need to escape their comfort zones asap! Everything is new if you look at it the right way. Life is an adventure and more often than not, it's loads of fun and there's lots to discover. I've lived this way all my life and I will never be old.

I read that NYT article and almost reposted it to my Facebook profile, a little source of joy and hope for me and all my middle-aged friends.
